PureZC was originally started in May of 2002, when webmaster Wild Bill installed a phpBB2 simply to mess around. After messing with the phpBB2, it was skinned green and called PureZC. The goal and approach of PureZC was different than other Zelda Classic sites of that time. Instead of being a resource for all things Zelda Classic, it was to be simply a place to get strictly creations of higher quality, as the Armageddon Games Official Quest Database was a complete resource for quests, and the Official Tile Database was a complete resource for tiles.
During the early days, a new concept was concocted: hosted quest forums, where hostees could develop their quest and post anything about it. This concept was spurred by plith, who requested a hosted forum for his quest. Since then, more and more people have gotten their own quest forum, and the concept has been adapted at other forums.
As time went on, PureZC evolved as Wild Bill learned new techniques to maintaining the site. The design of the site was completely overhauled, and was recoded from scratch. Through all of the changes made on the site, the forums were also overhauled so that they would match the site and give the whole site a professional feel.
After the recoding of the site, Matt Lee suggested using MySQL to run the site dynamically. During the entire history of PureZC, the downloads were manually coded into the page, which made it a hassle to maintain. After Wild Bill learned MySQL with the help of Matt Lee, PureZC began to develop quickly. Staff was added to the site, users were allowed to submit their quests and tiles, and the whole approach of PureZC evolved into what it is today.
In the early months of PureZC, members resorted to AIM chats to talk to other members. However, this was ultimately not very efficient, since there was no definite way to find the chatroom except by invitation. After it had been suggested numerous times, we decided to open an IRC channel on chat.planetz.net. It later moved to irc.initialized.org. Eventually initialized shut down, so our chat room had to move again. It currently exists at irc.sixlabrats.com.
PureZC's home on the Internet has varied since its original opening. It has been on 4 different servers, and at 3 different addresses, the first two of which were freely provided subdomains. After the first location was no longer available, the site was down for weeks until it was taken under a different wing. Since then, down times have been few and short.
In October of 2002, our phpBB2 crashed. A major bug caused all of the posts to disappear. Luckily the member base was not lost. We managed to recover most of the posts, but with a lot of problems. Due to this problem in phpBB2, we converted the forums to Invision Power Board, which they have been using since then.
To this day, PureZC is one of the most popular and successful Zelda Classic sites. It would not have been possible without the help of everybody who contributed to the development of the site, those who hosted it for free until it was tried and true, as well as all of the users who make this community a success every passing day.
